Malaysian Society of Cytology (MSOC) was first established in 2012, with aspiration as the collective point of the practicing cytopathologist as well as cytotechnicians in Malaysia. As one of the society that serves the local laboratory community, the quality assurance programme was developed, to help cytology laborarories in gaining certification as accredited laboratory, in tandem with the laboratory quality requirements.
This programme started in 2018 with early work by Prof. Dato Dr Sharifah Noor Akmal, Dato Dr Norain Karim and Dr. Noorasmaliza Md Paiman . Currently this programme covers both gynaecology cytology as wells as non-gynaecology cytology, inclduing the fine needle aspiration cytology. It is organized by Malaysian Society of Cytology 2024 with collaboration with Innovz Sdn Bhd (893484-X), whom is appointed as the subcontractor to solely involved in subscription, glass slide distribution, slide digitization and DVDs/pendrives distribution to subscribers of the program.
Objectives
1. To provide an external quality programme for the quality activity of cytology laboratories
2. To provide insight for the participating laboratory on diagnostic and technical compentency in continuing their performance.
3. To educate participating laboratories based on the outcomes of this quality assurance program
The MSOCQAP programme is composed of 2 programmes
Diagnostic
This is a programme that involves participant (individual laboratory) in giving diagnosis of glass slides (Gyn cytology) as wells as digitized images (Non-gyn & FNAC).The cases are selected by a panel of expert, appointed by the Malaysian Society of Cytology. It is a TWO CYCLES/YEAR programme (i.e. April/May and September/October)
Technical
This programme looks into the quality of slide preparations in individual laboratories. It is a ONE CYCLE/YEAR programme that typically starts in April.

Subscription Interest Form
Subscription
All laboratoratories in Malaysia are invited to subscribe to the programme.
Subscription are yearly based, with invitation of subscription sent to laboratories in December each year.
Once subscription is confirmed (upon payment), the person-in-charge will be contacted for the details of programme.
Each laboratories will be given report as wells as subscription certificate for participation.
All information supplied by a participant to the MSOC scheme shall be treated as confidential

MSOCQAP DIAGNOSTIC MODULE
This involves 4 components i.e Gynaecology Cytology ( Conventional, Surepath,Thinprep/Pathtezt), Non-Gynaecology Cytology (Fluid, Lavage,Urine etc) and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (Thyroid, Salivary gland,EBUS,EUS etc).Laboratories are allowed to choose more than one components for the participation.
Upon opening of the programme, the participant ( through PIC) will be informed for each of the programme start and timeline as well as the deadline. Submission of answers after the deadline will not be accepted.A specific (Gyn) and general (non-gyn&fnac) performance report will be given at the end of each cycle. A further discussion of the report will also be presented at the yearly MSOC Annual General Meeting.
DIAGNOSTIC MODULE - GYNAE
This involves 2 types of preparation of gynaecology cytology namely conventional method as well as liquid based ( Surepath & Thinprep/Pathtezt).
Each individual laboratory are allowed to choose any 3 or combine with another one or all the preparations.
For each cycle, each individual laboratory will be give 5 glass slides of each preparation subscribed.
Participants are then required to give their answers with codes prepared, through a google form provided in the cycle information.
At the end of each cycle, individual laboratory will be given individual laboratory participation report on the concordance and non-corcodance. This report can be used for the performance in the their own laboratory quality activity.
DIAGNOSTIC MODULE - NONGYNAE & FNAC
This involves preparations of pap AND/OR mgg stains of each cases.
Each individual laboratory are allowed to subscribe each or both of the sub-modules.
For each cycle, each individual laboratory will be given the digitized whole slide image in form of thumbdrive.
Participants are required to give answers (free-text) through a google form provided in the cycle information.
At the end of each cycle, individual laboratory will be given a general participation report on the concordance and non-corcodance for all the participitating laboratories.
Each laboratories are allowed to use this report for self-evaluation of their performance for each cycle for the use of quality activities.
REQUEST OF DIAGNOSIS
When an interested party requires the diagnoses submitted by a particular laboratory to be directly provided by MSOC, the participating lab shall be made aware of the arrangement in advance and a written request shall be submitted to the MSOC, which includes evidence of agreement of the participating laboratory to the arrangement. In exceptional circumstances, when a regulatory authority requires diagnoses submitted by a particular laboratory to be directly provided to the authority by MSOC, the affected participating laboratory shall be notified of this action in writing.

TECHNICAL QIALITY ASSESSMENT CYTOPATHOLOGY PROGRAMME CYCLE 2025Body Fluid Assessment: Pleural, Pericardial, or Peritoneal Fluid.
This survey aims to evaluate the preparation and staining techniques commonly used for body fluid specimens, with a particular focus on dry-fixed stains.
Participants are required to submit an assessment slide prepared from a recently received body fluid specimen that contains adequate cellular material.
The slide must be derived from the most recent specimen received by the participating center.
Kindly note that submitted slides will not be returned.
The survey checklist and questionnaire will be distributed to participants on 15 April 2025. Participants will be given one month to submit the required material to the designated recognized center.
The submitted materials will be analyzed by an appointed committee using the standard criteria set by RCPA.
